Winter Birds of Point Reyes
Join Blue Waters Kayaking and Naturalist Christ Starbird as we seek out waders and waterbirds, woodpeckers & warblers, hawks and herons in forests, meadows, ponds, bays and the ocean.

This is a three part series aimed at investigating three different types of habitat and observing different birds in each.  We will investigate the outer Point Reyes Peninsula, including Abbotts Lagoon and Drake's Bay.  On November 26th we will hike out to the coast beyond Abbott's Lagoon.  On December 17 we will focus on Drake's Estero and hike out the Estero Trail.  On the last meeting, January 7th we will meet at Limantour Beach and investigate the marsh and open beach environment.  These hikes will increase your identification skills and you will learn about individual behaviors, survival strategies, origins and world populations of our avian neighbors.

The Tomales Point Trail: Elk and Spectacular Views

Distance: 3-4 miles round trip

Tomales Point offers one of the most dramatic hikes in the entirepark.  Tule elk roam the point in herds that will astound you.  Elk arethe largest native California mammal and the Tule elk bulls can weigh asmuch as 2200 lbs.   Along this trail other bird life abounds including redtailed hawks, harrier or marsh hawks, and kestrels to name a few.  As you move along you'll be amazed at the views to the west of the Pacific Ocean to the east of Tomales Bay.   The trail skirts along an escarpment looking down at the sea stacks where harbor seals have hauled-out to enjoy some afternoon warmth.  On this hike we will walk out the trail 3 miles, noting wildlife and enjoying the ocean breeze before turning back.   The trial is mostly level and thus this hike is for beginners with an enthusiasm to see some of Pt. Reyes most amazing wildlife.
